Dr Peter Lau has over 10 years of treatment and research experience in melanoma, complex skin, breast cancer other cancers treated with immunotherapy.

After completing medical training at the University of Queensland in 2007 he commenced physician training at Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital. Peter then returned home to Perth to complete his advanced training in medical oncology in 2012 and was an inaugural recipient of the WA Cancer and Palliative Care and Cancer Research Fellowship in 2014. Peter attained specialist recognition in medical oncology in 2015, and was appointed to the Melanoma & Skin Unit at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre from 2016 to 2020. During this time, he completed a laboratory-based PhD in melanoma, with research focused on mechanisms of resistance to immunotherapy and adoptive cell transfer.

In addition to Perth Immuno-Oncology, Peter is currently appointed as a medical oncologist at Breast Cancer Research Centre – WA and Linear Clinical Research, and Translational Oncology Fellow at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. He leads a number of clinical trials at Linear Clinical Research and Hollywood Private Hospital in melanoma, breast and other solid cancers using novel therapies including antibody drug conjugates, small molecule and immunotherapy agents. At Harry Perkins, Peter also serves as a WA Kirkbride Melanoma Advisory Service (WAKMAS) committee member and is  the clinical lead for Australia’s only locally manufactured GMP tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) cell therapy program for melanoma. 

Peter is deeply involved in cancer research, including the design and delivery of clinical trials, first-in-human studies and translational laboratory research. Through this work, he has contributed heavily to cancer research and is the author of over 25 peer-reviewed publications.

Amongst all his work, Peter is an avid cyclist and enjoys spending time with his family. He follows the West Coast Eagles, Perth Wildcats, Perth Lynx and Perth Scorchers.
